CHENDA CLASS

The Chenda, played as an accompaniment to the religious art forms and rituals of Kerala, is an unavoidable part of our heritage. With the support of a few enthusiasts and a handful of people, we started our endeavour in learning and mastering this percussion instrument in 2016. From then, we’ve grown to a state in which Chenda Melam has become an inevitable part of our cultural programs, conducted in Adelaide. Each year, we bring in new Thalams (rhythms), and the performances have increased and expanded to other Indian communities and multicultural events, which shows the interest in the community towards this traditional art form. For most, it’s nostalgic and links directly to the roots of our homeland, while for the younger ones, who haven’t experienced this before, it gives that sense of exhilaration due to the passion displayed by the older folks.
