The Legend dates back to Tamil literature Chilapathikaram… the Kovalan and Kannaki story. After marriage of Movalan, a merchant to Kannaki he fell in relation with Madhavi, a dancer. He spent all his riches on her forgetting his wife. But when he was penniless, he went back to Kannaki. The only thing left to sold was Kannaki’s precious pair of Anklets. They went to the king of Madurai to sell it. Mistaken it as he stolen anklet of queen Madurai he was beheaded by the king. Infuriated Kannaki, after setting Madurai on fire of anger, reached the Killiyar river tried and mourning. A local old man helped her to cross the river and the women of the land made her food. Before she vanished, become the presiding goddess of Attukal. Years ATTUKAL PONGALA.
The Attukal Devi Temple, situated in Attukal, Thiruvanathapuram , Kerala, is widely known as the “The Sabarimala for Women”. At this temple, the famous Attukal Pongala is celebrated on the Auspicious day of Pooram Star. Female devotees from all walks of life, prepare Pongal, a rice dish, in earthen pots, which they then offer to the Attukkal Devi. Such is the popularity of the Attukal Pongala Event, that in 2009, it received a Guiness World Record for the largest annual gathering of women, when more than 2.5 milliion women were in attendance.
